When Freddie was young, he saw a plane up close for the first time when it dropped off supplies at his family's remote bush camp. He was instantly hooked.

Freddie has flown for nearly seventy years, doing everything from supply runs to search and rescue to transporting dog teams to far-flung areas.

This book celebrates Freddie's early dreams of flying and his later achievements. Readers move with Freddie through the year, hearing about his journey as a pilot and leader, while learning the names of the months in Gwich'in and Inuvialuktun at the same time. Art from Inuvialuit painter Audrea Loreen-Wulf perfectly captures the incredible Western Arctic as well as Freddie's love for aviation.

Blue Spruce Nominee. A day in Chinatown takes an unexpected turn when a bored little girl makes a connection with her grandpa. May isn't having fun on her trip through Chinatown with her grandfather. Gong Gong doesn't speak much English, and May can't understand Chinese. She's hungry, and bored with Gong Gong's errands. Plus, it seems like Gong Gong's friends are making fun of her! But just when May can't take any more, Gong Gong surprises her with a gift that reveals he's been paying more attention than she thought. With lighthearted, expressive illustrations by Elaine Chen, this charming debut expertly captures life in the city and shows how small, shared moments of patience and care--and a dumpling or two--can help a child and grandparent bridge the generational and cultural gaps between them. A glossary at the end of the book features translations of the Chinese words from the story into Chinese characters and English.

Bear wants to sing his song, but the other animals won't give him a chance to perform his masterwork in this delightful picture book companion to the critically acclaimed King Mouse.

A bear finds a ukulele in the woods. It makes a nice sound -- PLINK! -- and inspires him to write his own song. His friend Mouse would love to hear it. But Bear isn't the only animal in the forest to find musical inspiration that day, and Snake, Crow and Tortoise keep taking his turn to perform. When they finally give him the opportunity and meet his song with less enthusiasm than he'd like, the discouraged bear shelves his music career forever . . . but the kindness, empathy and appreciation of his best friend will prove that his art deserves recognition and can even inspire others.

This dryly humorous and sweetly profound collaboration between two critically acclaimed children's book creators, a follow-up to the masterful King Mouse, has the makings of a modern classic.

Nothing can ruin a picnic faster than a bunch of ants. It's a good thing there are no ants in this book . . . well, maybe there's only one. Or two. . . . Or ten??

Maybe it's not so bad. Ants are kind of cool, after all — especially the ones with amazing butts, like the Acrobat Ant that waves its back end around to scare off enemies. Or the Slender Leaf Ant that can glide through the air. Or the Dinosaur Ant, which is the biggest ant in the world! Okay, so a picnic with ants is actually lots of fun!

The story begins with two little mittens, Dotty, and Other Dotty, but there is also a third mitten, Stripes. “You don’t match” say Dotty and Other Dotty, “What’s the use of a single mitten?”

Stripes is sure there must be a reason for her to be there, but the two Dotty’s cant see it and the truth is, Stripes can’t see her purpose either. She had been trapped in the little girl’s pocket, she never got out, she never made a snowball, she never patted a dog.

But then, one day, Other Dotty is accidentally left behind and Stripes and Dotty become a pair. The situation feels odd to both of them, they both agree that it just feels weird. But as they get to know each other, they became almost friends, but then someone else turns up….

Other Stripes had been dragged under the couch by a dog and had been left there for a whole month, but now the two Stripes are reunited, and Dotty is the odd one out. As the three mittens were debating the purpose of an extra mitten, they hear a big voice, who says “I have a question”.

The big voice belongs to the little girl, she wonders “why do you have to match?” The mittens don’t know, but they do know that somebody always gets left out and that means that somebody doesn’t feel good. The little girl retrieves a cardboard box from the closet and dumps out all of her lost and odd mittens, and even a few gloves. She decides that from now on she is going to wear non-matching mittens every day.

At first the mittens find it weird but gradually they get to know and like each other. They meet new friends and discover that every one of them is an original. It’s not long before the socks and the shoes catch on……

This book speaks to inclusion and belonging, but it also speaks to the importance of individuality and knowing your own worth.

After all, who'd want to expose themselves to the the aches and pains of pricking, poking and squeezing? It's a prescription for disaster! Scaredy can't avoid the doctor forever though, and when he realizes that he needs to make a quick visit to Dr. Vet to get his health certificate, he does whatever it takes to keep safe while he waits at the clinic . . . including covering himself in bubble wrap. Miriam seems to have an answer for everything about snow dragons. But when Celeste wanders off, she has a magical encounter that changes everything she thought she knew.
